SUGAR NIPPERS:
Years
ago, sugar was sold to local general
stores in one large chunk or
“sugarloaf” as tall as 3 feet and
weight up to 55 pounds.
A
hammer was used to break the sugarloaf
into smaller chunks, which were then
hung from the ceiling (for protection
from ants or rats) and covered with
netting.
These
“sugar nippers” (which you can see in
our Museum’s permanent General Store
display) were then used by the
shopkeeper to remove small pieces for
individual customers.
